How the First Christmas Defeated Evil

December 1, 2025 | Sam Rainer

When we think of Christmas, we picture a manger, shepherds, angels, and a quiet night filled with glory and peace. That is the earth-level view of Christmas in
Luke 2. But Revelation 12 gives us the heaven-level view, the spiritual reality behind that night. And what we see is not calm and quiet, but warfare. Christmas was not just the birth of a baby; it was the arrival of a Warrior.
Revelation 12 reveals a woman in labor, a child ready to be born, and a dragon waiting to devour Him. The woman symbolizes Israel, Mary, and the church. The Child is Jesus, the One who will “rule all nations.” And the dragon is Satan, poised to destroy the promised Messiah before His life even begins.
But Satan fails. He always fails when he tries to stop the plans of God.
This scene reminds us that the story of Christmas did not begin in Bethlehem. It began in Eden. When sin entered the world, God promised that the offspring of the woman would crush the serpent’s head (Genesis 3:15). For centuries, Satan tried to cut off that promise:
Through Cain and Abel
Through Pharaoh’s slaughter of newborn boys
Through Haman’s plot in Esther
Through Herod’s massacre in Bethlehem
But he could not stop Christ. He could not stop Christmas. The child was born, lived, died, rose, and ascended to the throne. The dragon lost. Jesus wins. That is the message of Revelation 12. The cry of the infant was the battle trumpet of heaven. Christmas is not sentimental; it is victorious.
And yet, Satan continues to rage. “He declared war against her children” (Revelation 12:17). He attacks believers. He confuses identities. He steals innocence. He deceives with clever lies that sound spiritual but deny Scripture. His goal is always the same —to pull people away from trusting God.
But Revelation gives us the truth we need: Satan does not win. Revelation 12:11 reveals, “They have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony.”The battle is real, but the victory is already secured. We do not fight for victory. We fight from victory. So what does this mean for us this Christmas? Do not fear the enemy. He is furious, but he is finished.
Cling to Christ. The Lamb has already won.
Stand firm in truth. Reject the lies that twist God’s Word.
Live boldly. A people who are unafraid of death cannot be stopped.
Christmas is God’s declaration to the universe: “Salvation has come. The Kingdom is here. Christ is King.” The dragon tried to stop Christmas. Christ crushed him instead. So celebrate Christmas not just with warmth, but with confidence. The first Christmas has already defeated evil. Live like someone who knows the war is already won.
