Mount Moriah and God’s Requirement of a Living Sacrifice

July 29, 2024 | Sam Rainer

In Romans 12:1-2, Paul presents the concept of a “living sacrifice,” a paradox that encourages believers to offer themselves to God continually. Unlike typical sacrifices that end in death, a living sacrifice is a continuous act of surrender, signifying that our lives belong entirely to God. This theme resonates deeply with the story of Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moriah, one of the Old Testament’s most profound narratives of faith and obedience.

In Genesis 22:1-2, God tests Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac, the very son through whom God’s promises were to be fulfilled. Abraham’s journey to Mount Moriah is laden with emotional, theological, and relational tensions. Yet, Abraham’s unwavering faith is evident as he prepares for the sacrifice without hesitation or bargaining with God.

Jesus teaches in Matthew 17:20 that faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. This metaphor highlights the extraordinary power of faith, which Abraham exemplifies on Mount Moriah. Despite the seeming contradiction of God’s promise and His command, Abraham trusts in God’s plan.

As Abraham ascends Mount Moriah, he does not see the ram God has provided as a substitute for Isaac. It is only after his act of obedience that God’s provision becomes evident. This event teaches us that God often reveals His solutions after we step out in faith and obedience. Abraham names the place “Jehovah Jireh,” meaning “The Lord will provide,” acknowledging not just a past provision but anticipating future faithfulness.

The story of Isaac foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Both Isaac and Jesus are promised sons, supernaturally conceived, destined to bless all nations. The willingness of the Father to offer His Son and the Son’s submission parallels Abraham’s test. Jesus, the Lamb of God, came to take away the sins of the world, providing eternal life to all who believe.

Abraham’s story on Mount Moriah is a powerful testament to the faith that moves mountains. It calls us to trust in God’s provision, even when His plans are unclear. As we reflect on this narrative, let us remember that Jehovah Jireh, the God who provides, is faithful and His provisions are always timely. May we live as sacrifices, wholly devoted to Him, and anticipate His continuous provision in our lives.
