Anxiety is one of the most pervasive struggles of our time, especially among young people. The statistics are staggering—since 2010, rates of anxiety and depression in adolescents and young adults have skyrocketed. This isn’t just a passing trend; it’s a transformation of how we live, think, and feel. Much of this change can be traced to the rise of smartphones and social media, which have rewired how we connect, think, and measure our worth.
But as followers of Jesus, we are called to a different way of life—one that challenges the narrative of anxiety and fear.
What Does the Bible Say About Anxiety?
The Bible speaks directly to our struggle with anxiety. Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:25-30 remind us not to worry about our lives, because God, who clothes the lilies of the field and feeds the birds of the air, cares deeply for us. Anxiety, at its core, stems from two fears: losing what we love or getting what we hate. It’s easy to see how this can spiral when we measure our worth by likes, shares, or the curated lives we see online.
Scripture gives us a path forward: trust. In 1 Peter 5:6-7, we are told to cast our anxieties on God because He cares for us. When we fail to do this, we often act as if God doesn’t care or isn’t powerful enough to handle our struggles. But the truth of the Gospel reminds us that God is both sovereign and loving. Anxiety is a natural human experience, but it becomes harmful when it disrupts our relationship with God and others.
How Anxiety Distorts Our Faith
Anxiety can lead us into a vicious cycle of overthinking, negativity, and distrust in God’s promises. The enemy knows this and uses it against us. 1 Peter 5:8 warns us to stay alert because Satan prowls like a roaring lion, seeking to devour. He uses anxiety to sow guilt, sap life, and steal our hope. When we feel weighed down, it’s easy to believe the lies Satan whispers: “You’re not enough. God doesn’t love you. There’s no way out.” But the hope of Jesus tells a different story. Jesus overcame sin, death, and the grave to ensure that our fears, anxieties, and doubts have a definitive answer in Him.
The Resurrection: Hope for the Anxious
The resurrection of Jesus is our ultimate source of peace. It promises victory over fear, calm in the storm, and assurance in the face of doubt. As Colossians 1:27 says, “Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.” When we anchor our lives in this truth, we find that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to calm our anxious hearts. No matter what weighs you down, the hope of Jesus conquers all. Fear, shame, and anxiety were defeated at the cross. Rest in that truth, and let it reshape your heart and mind.
