What does it mean to be a “member” of a church? Take a moment and read Romans 12:3-5. Notice the language about how each part of the body works together. You alone (as one member) can’t do God’s mission. But together (as the body), we can change the world.
Membership in a church is not like a country club, where you pay your dues and get services in return. The members of a church are a team of people unified for God’s mission, working together.
Similar to the physical body, the spiritual body of the church requires everyone to be unified. The foot apart from the leg cannot walk. The hand apart from the arm cannot embrace. The local church is an expression of the body of Christ. We are His hands and feet, doing His work here on earth. He is the Head, guiding and directing us in this work. We can’t do this work alone —apart from Christ or each other.
If you are a member of West B, then what are the expectations of you? Our seven-part covenant contains the expectations of every church member.
1. I will worship.
2. I will grow.
3. I will serve.
4. I will give.
5. I will seek unity.
6. I will pray.
7. I will share.
On Sunday, we’ll cover each of these expectations in more depth. We’re finishing our discipleship series. A disciple is a follower and learner of a teacher. Discipleship is the process of devoting yourself to becoming like the one teaching you. Discipleship means learning from someone, being devoted to someone, and being committed to their cause. In the context of our church, we are committed to Christ, His mission, and His kingdom.
Discipleship occurs within community. Accountability is impossible apart from a body of believers. Selflessness requires interaction with others. You can’t be a solo disciple. You need the church, and the church needs you!
