Unlocking the Goodness of God

July 21, 2025 | Sam Rainer

Locks are meant to protect what’s valuable. We lock our homes, our phones, our cars—anything worth guarding. But when something is locked, you need the right key to gain access. In Romans 5, Paul tells us about the most precious things in the world—peace, joy, endurance, hope, and salvation—and how to unlock them. The key? Faith in Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:2 says, “Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.” Through faith, we are ushered into a reality that’s bigger than our circumstances. We don’t earn our place before God; we’re brought there by Jesus. And the result is confidence, joy, and peace.
But this peace isn’t an escape from hardship. It’s a calling into it.
Jesus didn’t avoid sorrow. He stepped into it. He was called the “Man of Sorrows,” yet never controlled by fear. Likewise, the peace of God doesn’t remove us from trouble; it steadies us through it. Romans 5:3 reminds us we’ll face trials, but our peace in Christ empowers us to move into dark places with the light of the gospel.
Faith changes how we see suffering. It doesn’t erase the pain, but it reframes it. Trials build endurance. Endurance shapes character. And character fuels a hope that will
never disappoint (Romans 5:4–5). Why? Because our hope is not wishful thinking—it’s grounded in God’s unchanging love and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 5 takes us deeper still. We’re reminded of the gospel’s heartbeat: “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (v8). God didn’t wait for us to clean ourselves up.
He loved us in our worst moments and gave us His best. Through Jesus, we’re no longer enemies of God but friends (v. 10). We’ve been restored, redeemed, and justified.
And then Paul draws a stunning contrast between two men—Adam and Jesus. Adam’s sin infected the whole world with death. But Jesus’ obedience brought justification and life. One man broke the world. Another man saved it.
This is the miracle of grace. Theologians call it imputation: Adam’s guilt was transferred to us. Our sin was transferred to Jesus. And His righteousness? Transferred to us. It’s as if God opened our account, wiped out our debt, and deposited eternal life.
Romans 5:21 declares it boldly: “God’s wonderful grace rules… resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Sin once ruled. But now, grace reigns.
So, how do you unlock God’s goodness? Not by performance. Not by pretending. But by placing your trust in Christ. Grace is the key. Faith is the hand that turns it. Whatever guilt you carry, whatever fear you have, faith unlocks the door to a life of hope, peace, and eternal joy. Step through it today. Live loved. Live unashamed. And let God’s grace rule your life.
